We still hear customers say they would like to see samples of hardwood floors but don't want an "Engineered Floor", thinking that they are referring to a laminate floor. Engineered hardwood flooring is actually a plywood core with the actual hardwood layer on top. The thickness will very generally from 1mm to 4mm depending on the manufacturer and line of flooring. Engineered wood floors can be more resistant to moisture and tend to be more stable than solid wood flooring. Concrete floors have an increased level of moisture which is not a problem for most engineered wood floors, unlike a solid hardwood floor.
The increased stability and moisture tolerance is directly related to how the engineered hardwood floor is made. You can see in this photo a cross section of a very high-quality, engineered wood floor.
The top layer is a veneer of the chosen wood species; the thicker that veneer is, the more expensive the floor will generally be. If you choose a veneer that is very thin (.6mm or so) the resulting floor cannot be refinished should that ever be needed. However, when the top veneer is between 2 mm and 4 mm, it can be refinished multiple times. A common misconception is how many times a floor will NEED to be sanded down and refinished. Depending on your particular household, it's not uncommon that an engineered hardwood floor can last 20-40 years without a refinishing depending of course on the level of use and family size.
